Published Tuesday, May 06, 2008 Here's an urgent plea for us to help One Roof help the needy Editorial The alarm has been sounded. Once again, it's time for Coweta County residents to reach out to help the needy in our community through the One Roof Ecumenical Alliance Outreach, the program that operates the Coweta Community Food Pantry. This week, Derenda H. Rowe sent out an e-mail message appealing for help. "We need help. We need volunteers for One Roof, monetary donations for One Roof and donations of food for the Coweta Community Food Pantry." Rowe said One Roof has exhausted its funding, and during April the pantry fed 1,032 people. The demand is great. "Our county is being hit hard by the economy. We currently have homeless people sleeping in cars, tents or just outside. Homes are being foreclosed on and people without jobs are being evicted from their apartments. ... We have no food, no way of paying their utilities. Some are ill with no insurance and cannot find a doctor. Some have been waiting on disability for months ..." If you can volunteer a few hours a week, that would help. When you write checks to pay your bills, can you send One Roof a check? Can you buy extra food and donate it to the food pantry? Here are food items that are needed: cereal, grits, oatmeal, cornbread mix, peanut butter, jelly, canned spaghetti sauce, crackers, cookies, rice, macaroni and cheese, instant potatoes, evaporated milk, juices, tea, sugar, beans, peas, canned vegetables, tomato sauce, canned fruit, canned tuna and other canned meats. Currently the pantry has plenty of canned corn, green beans and soups. Other items needed include: toilet tissue, paper towels, bar soap, toothpaste, disposable razors, lotion, shampoo, liquid dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent, feminine products, disposable diapers for children and adults. People right here in our community are hungry. Some do not have a place to live. Some can't pay their bills. Others are sick and can't get medical attention. The need is great. Please help. |
